Submission of the Week: Flying Armbar Jun 23, 2009
By DEAT
A few things:
1) Yes, I have seen this work IN COMPETITION, with no gi.
2) Yes, it’s easier to do with a gi.
3) I would only try it as a counter to an Osoto Gari. They are committed with the sweeping side arm either in a single collar or deep in the gi if you ( continued )

Submission of the Week: Clock Choke from Turtle Position May 26, 2009
By DEAT
This is a gi choke. Often, when your oppoent turtles or sprawls, you have a great opportunity for a submission immediately, instead of trying to work for position first. This is pretty easy and quick:

Submission of the Week: Standing Ankle Lock from Half Guard May 13, 2009
By DEAT
OK, I haven’t actually ever tried this one, but while I was looking for a good video of another submission, I came across it. It falls into the category of “It’s so krazy that it JUST MIGHT WORK.” Paulson is a genius.

Submission of the Week: Teepee Choke May 5, 2009
By DEAT
I call this the pyramid, but everyone else calls it a teepee. This is another sneaky one. You start a sloppy triangle choke, or they defend it by preventing you from pulling their arm over. The trick is to then lock your ankles and straighten your legs, using your arms to hug your knees ( continued )
Submission of the Week: Baseball Choke Apr 28, 2009
By DEAT
This is sick and sneaky. The guy jumps right into it thinking that he’s passing your guard. You can do it with a gable grip if you are wearing no gi. The tricks are to 1) bring your elbows close to your body, and 2) walk your feet away to almost get north south ( continued )
Submission of the Week: Bicep Crush Apr 20, 2009
By DEAT
This one is great for people who like armbars. Basically, most people defend the armbar by bending their arm and grabbing it with their farside hand. If they are tired, or not stacking you, they become immediately vulnerable to this one. TRY IT, it hurts like a fucking bitch.

By DEAT
This is my FAVORITE submission, and occasionally, when I get the scarf position, the guys I train with will say “not again!”
